Up to 10,000 m³ of treated wastewater per day: at the heart of the Dakhla wastewater treatment plant

Video Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the Dakhla wastewater treatment plant plays a crucial role in sustainable water management in the southern provinces. Find out more.

It’s a modern infrastructure that symbolizes Dakhla’s commitment to a more sustainable future. The wastewater treatment plant, which required an investment of 245 million dirhams, employs advanced filtration and biological treatment methods, guaranteeing effective purification of wastewater.

“The reuse of treated water for watering green spaces saves drinking water for other essential uses. This infrastructure can treat up to 10,000 m³ of water per day thanks to a tertiary treatment process”, explains laboratory technician Rachida Aboud in a statement for Le360.

The wastewater first passes through a primary treatment stage, during which suspended solids are precipitated and removed. After primary treatment, the water still contains dissolved and suspended organic matter.

“These materials are then eliminated through a biological treatment process”, explains our contact, adding that “a tertiary treatment stage removes further contaminants, notably through ultraviolet disinfection or using chlorine to kill any remaining bacteria”.

The plant also includes a laboratory to ensure that the quality of the purified water complies with current standards. “This laboratory carries out regular analyses and tests on treated water samples to monitor the concentration of various parameters such as organic matter, bacteria, residual chemicals and other potential contaminants”, says Rachida Aboud.

Regularly maintained equipment

Abdelkarim Marzoug, maintenance technician, highlights the technologies used for tertiary treatment, which are essential for ensuring the quality of treated water. He adds that regular equipment maintenance and rigorous quality controls are carried out to maintain the efficiency of this plant, which comprises 21 km of wastewater intake and interception collectors, five pumping stations and structures for transferring treated water for reuse.

The Dakhla wastewater treatment plant, which has a major impact on health, biology, the economy and the environment, bears witness to the Sovereign’s constant concern for the southern provinces and his determination to turn them into a genuine model of integrated development.
